Healthy Living: Standing Liposuction
(KUTV) To avoid having patients disappointed with the results of a plastic surgery, some doctors are now asking that you interact with them during the procedure.

Sandra Campos was awake during the middle of surgery, not for any kind of life saving procedure, but for the latest kind of cosmetic procedure called stand-up liposuction.

They are able to stand up, look in the mirror and decide if an area where I've done my liposuction needs a little more or a little less.

Traditional liposuction requires patients to lie down, completely knocked out by anesthesia. Many plastic surgeons like Dr. Leonard Grossman say the body's fat shifts in the horizontal position, distorting the figure. By standing Sandra up, he can achieve better results.

“We reduce the chance of having her needing or wanting to come back again for a small touch up. And saying Doc, you could have removed a little more,” said Dr, Grossman.

Mildly sedated, a nurse steadies Sandra on her feet while Dr. Grossman removes the unwanted fat from her thigh, where she's received a local anesthetic.

“It's just a logical procedure if you think about it,” said Dr. Grossman.

Chairman of plastic surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, Dr. Stephen Colen, says stand up liposuction is an excellent technique for small areas, but cautions it's not for everybody.

“When we do small volume liposuction where someone has a little fat around their hip or a little bit of fat around their thigh, and they don't need tremendous amounts of anesthesia, then stand up lipo is great,” said Dr. Colen.

Sandra is not only happy with her new curves, she says she enjoyed her own little episode of Nip/Tuck.

“I thought it was great, I could see what was being done while it was being done,” said Sandra.

Many doctors say the combination of sedation and local anesthesia avoids many of the dangers associated with general anesthesia.
