Liposuction Plastic Surgery

OVERVIEW
Liposuction Plastic Surgery is a procedure in which fat deposits can be removed from specific areas. Liposuction can be performed on a variety of areas including: abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Dr. Anagnos, a North Carolina Plastic Surgeon uses a variety of techniques to remove unwanted fat. Liposuction Plastic Surgery is a good way to remove stubborn fat deposits that are not responding to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not to be used as a substitute for eating healthy and exercising.

The best liposuction plastic surgery candidates are of a normal weight and have a few problem areas where fat deposits have settled. Good candidates will have firm elastic skin, as opposed to those patients that might have older less elastic or thin skin.

Your doctor will work with you to determine the appropriate places to perform the procedure on, and what techniques will work best for your needs. Liposuction can be performed in an outpatient or inpatient setting depending on the amount of fat you desire to remove.

Liposuction can help patients to contour their bodies and remove specific areas of fat for a slimmer contour.
SURGERY
There are a variety of techniques that a physician can use during the procedure. Your needs and desires will have an impact on which techniques will be used. The basic technique listed below is the standard for all liposuction procedures, however in the past few years new techniques like the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), the tumescent technique, and the super-wet technique have emerged to provide physicians and patients with more options. However, the same basic technique is used in every liposuction procedure.

Before the procedure begins, the doctor will apply a local anesthetic, or in other cases where a larger amount of fat is to be removed, a regional anesthetic (like an epidural during childbirth). In most cases a general anesthesia is not needed, however some patients tend to prefer it.

The amount of time that the liposuction plastic surgery takes really depends on the areas where the fat is being removed, the amount of fat being removed, and the techniques that are being used to remove the fat. The entire procedure can take 2 to 6 hours.

Dr. Anagnos will make a tiny incision near the area where the fat is being removed, through the incision a tube or a cannula is inserted and used to vacuum out the fat deposits in the surrounding areas. The cannula pushes through the fat layer, breaking the fat up making it easier to suction it out. You can have many areas treated at one time.

RECOVERY
After the surgery, patients can expect to have some fluid drainage from the incisions. In some cases a tube may be inserted to help with the drainage for a few days. Also most patients receive a snug garment that resembles panty hose to be worn in the days following the procedure. The garment helps the skin to better fit over the body's new contours and helps keep the swelling down. Patients are usually up and on their feet within a few days after the surgery. The scars from the incisions may be visible for months following the surgery. However, the scars are small and usually well hidden.

You can see the change in your bodies contour within days after the procedure. Swelling and full effects will not be seen for at least 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery.

RISKS
Like with all cosmetic surgical procedures, Liposuction does carry some risks. Risks are greater when higher amounts of fat are removed. Some risks include infection, shock from fluid loss, blood clots and the formation of fat clots.
